A typhoon has hit the shores in this part of Japan; the wind has been howling wildly since early morning. Thankfully I’m sitting indoors, though I do pity those who have to work outside. While there isn’t any rain yet, the wind is so strong I won’t be surprised if it knocks over some branches. I sure hope not…

When it’s dark and grey outside I look to cheery interiors to brighten up the mood. It’s easy to be inspired, what with the hydrangeas and irises all abloom. But summer won’t be summer without blue skies and the sunflower!

Today we’ll talk about blue and yellow interiors, a classic and much-loved color palette. We mostly associate blue with cool and calm, while yellow is considered to be bright and cheery. Putting these two side by side is a fun exercise in opposites attract: a room that is bold yet serene.

The Charm of Yellow and Blue

Here are some beautiful spaces with blue and yellow hues.

With a neutral wall color it’s easy to add vivid accents, like the brightly upholstered blue chair and citrine throw pillow in the living room above (above left). For casual outdoor dining, I’m loving the large vase of sunflowers (above right). The khaki stripes and white umbrella provide a breezy touch perfect for summer.

More than a plain, neutral wall, however, I adore this damask-paisley wall covering in a bedroom designed by Sig Bergamin (above). To accent the blue fabrics, a silkscreen artwork with bright yellow tones is hung above the headboard. I love the hues and eclectic mix of patterns in this space.

Finally, for those of us with a major crush on blue, here’s a lovely living room with a bold blue walls complemented by white trim and flooring (above). I like how the striped sofa works with the solid yellow side chairs. I give this room two thumbs up!

Like many others, blue is my favorite color, and if I didn’t live in an apartment (with a husband who has to have white walls) I would happily wallpaper a wall with bold and beautiful Bleu de France.

Colors of Summer

Seasonal accessories can give our homes and wardrobe a simple summer makeover. I found these lovely blue and yellow items that have a breezy summer look to them.

The striped accent chair goes so well with the floral patterned yellow armchair. Decorating with the sunflower vase and bowl is just right for summer. The sea and sunflower-themed jewelry? Simply a wonderful way to celebrate the season! Which one’s your favorite?

Sunflower Paradise

Now that we mentioned sunflowers here are some gift items I designed with a sunflower photo I took at the Oiwake-shimin-no-mori in Yokohama, Japan.

The place is a gorgeous sunflower field that’s planted and raised by a community of volunteers.

I like how both the petals and center are yellow for this flower. I think it’s either the Monet or Lemon Aura variety.

I added orange and yellow stripes on the lower side and a sky blue strip for writing your name, initials or other text.

All of these items are fully customizable, so they make wonderful gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and housewarming events, or any summer-related party.
