Art Deco Tulip Loveseat & Club Chair
Product Information
I have never been to Iceland, but if I’m going there I would sure like to stay at the Hotel Borg.
The dramatic contrast between the dark walls and white curtains emphasizes the clean lines of the furniture. See the tulip sofa and chairs? Classic Art Deco!
In this article we’ll take a look at my 3D models of the classic Art Deco tulip chairs, sometimes called shell-shaped chairs. We’ll then pick some favorite contemporary interpretations of the Art Deco club (or tub) chair, some of which have shell-shaped backs.
3D Visualization
Here’s my 3D model of a tulip loveseat.
The arms are veneered with burr amboyna, the base is coated with black lacquer (with some “cracks” for an antique look), the upholstery is beige leather.
I couldn’t resist making variations with the wood and upholstery.
The model in front has a black lacquer veneer, with leather upholstery in ivory. Kingwood veneer and a zebra-patterned upholstery is the look of the model in the back.
I felt the need to model the chair version as well. In the 1930s matching “furniture sets” were a trendy thing. We might as well model the chair type! Here we go:
Now we can have an Art Deco furniture set to go with our fireplace π Below is my rendering of an Art Deco hotel room.
The framed photographs next to the fireplace are photos of New York City that I took when we visited there in 2011.
The tulip loveseat and chairs are look really elegant and cozy at the same time!

Love, love, love this! Can’t wait for the “set” to come out!
Thank you, Han! I posted the sofa first and then updated later by adding the chairs. Sorry for that–perhaps I should have posted the additions in a separate article instead. I still need to model the center table. Coming soon!
These look like very comfy seating. Don’t like the zebra print upholstery much though. I wonder if tulip colors would work for a modern home?
Thank you, Kris! These days there are plenty of mixed-style interiors (Queen Anne chair in an all-white contemporary room, or B&B ITALIA modern furniture in a Neoclassical room). Since eclecticism is in I’m quite certain the tulip chairs could be arranged to fit a contemporary home. For our 3D room model it would be an Art Deco-only style, though. π
