Do you sleep on a nice bed?

For some time now I’ve been sleeping on a futon, laid out on tatami mats in a Japanese-style room. The only time I get to sleep on a bed is when I’m traveling and staying at a hotel. Sometimes I miss having a bed at home!

Beds are perhaps the most important feature of a hotel room, though the deciding factor would be more the mattress and pillows than the style of the bed frame itself. Given that we have the best bedding available, what would the frame be for our Art Deco bed? I trawled through 1stdibs and other antique shops, wanting to model an authentic 1930s style bed. Nothing memorable came up, until I found this:

Isn’t the Streamline Art Deco design simply gorgeous? I instantly loved the curvilinear form. The real-life bed is crafted by Heitzman Studios, a custom furniture shop specializing in the Art Deco & Art Nouveau styles.

Since the bed is fully custom-made, it can be veneered in any type of wood. Needless to say, I had plenty of fun not just modeling the frame itself but also trying out different kinds of veneer!

Here’s the bed, with a rosewood and burl amboyna veneer, black lacquered base, and chrome trimmings.

Next I tried Honduras mahogany and burl maple veneers. I’m thinking of veneering the fireplace mantel with the same mahogany, and use the same maple for the chairs. That would make the bed match the sitting area set.

Now here’s one with Spanish cedar and bird’s eye maple veneer. I’ve toyed with the idea of not just a silver themed room, but also a “gold” version, with pearwood walls and dark flooring. A room like that would be great for a light-colored bed.

I don’t have a room thought out for the next one, but I really liked the wenge wood texture at Pollaro Custom Furniture, so I tried pairing it with the Bird’s Eye Maple veneer seen earlier.

Here is my finished model of a room containing the bed above, in rosewood and burl amboyna with chrome trimmings and black lacquered base.

The rich red color and vivid patterns of the wood are enhanced by the silver-and-white theme. Two Art Deco zigzag lamps sit on the night stand, their chrome base matching the trimmings of the bed. A sunburst mirror rests above the headboard. You can also see a desk built using the same wood veneer as the bed, to create a matching bedroom suite that was all the rage during the Art Deco golden age.
