Art Deco French U-shaped Table

Product Information

Some call them “U-shaped”, while others use the term “tulip-shaped”. Whatever the legs of these tables are called, they have a unique design, well-executed during the Art Deco period but not so commonly seen these days. Here is my collection of these beauties on Pinterest:

In the book Furniture: World Styles from Classical to Contemporary by Judith Miller (Dorling Kindersley, 2011), there is a French Art Deco U-shaped side table described as the following:

“This graceful French side table has a rectangular top with a stepped edge. It is supported by a tulip-shaped structure, rather than conventional legs, with decorative chrome detailing at the base. The table has been restored and piano varnished, hence its glossy black appearance. c. 1930.” (Excerpt from p. 413 of Furniture: World Styles from Classical to Contemporary by Judith Miller

I modeled the table and it looks something like this:

I lengthened the top a bit with this one, and gave it a “cracked black lacquer” appearance instead of glossy black.

Here it is in an Art Deco-style room. I coordinated the table with a pair of Art Deco tulip chairs and a matching loveseat. I think the black lacquer of the table sets off beautifully the black base of the chairs, as well as the black surround of the Art Deco fireplace.

It’s a side table but I used it here as a coffee table. For its placement I was very much inspired by the sitting room design of a New York townhouse by Naomi Leff.
